The following is a sampling of businesses that have established locations or expanded operations already based in the St. Louis area in 2008.
Timewell Tile Inc. - Based in Timewell, IL, Timewell Tile Inc. has signed a lease for three acres of land in Caseyville, IL in St. Clair County. The company plans to create 10 new jobs in the next two to three years. The total capital investment is estimated to be $638,000 and new payroll is $250,000.
Wachovia Securities - Wachovia Securities announced their consolidation with St. Louis based A.G. Edwards. In addition to the retention of 4,700 jobs, the company announced plans to add 500 to possibly 1,000 jobs within the next two years.
Sisters of Mercy Health System - The Sisters of Mercy Health System has begun construction on a new 40,000-square-foot data center in Washington, MO. The new $60 million facility will serve Mercy hospitals, outpatient facilities, physician's offices, and other services throughout a seven state area. The data center will create 30 new jobs, and is slated for completion by August 2010.
FlightSafety International - FlightSafety International, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, has announced the expansion of their training services with the addition of new St. Louis Learning Center. The new 80,000-square-foot center will feature nine flight simulators used to train pilots of regional jets. The expansion will create 50 new jobs and $3.6 million in new payroll.
Brown Shoe - Brown Shoe has selected the City of Clayton as the site to consolidate its operations into a new headquarters campus. This move preserves 650 jobs in Clayton, MO and will result in the creation of up to 700 new jobs within the next five years. A $568 million mixed use development will be constructed on Brown Shoe’s 12-acre property in central Clayton. Two office buildings with a total of 1.25 million square feet plus 70,000-square-feet of retail space, and 300 new residential units will be developed on the property.
U.S. Steel - United States Steel Corporation, in partnership with SunCoke Energy, Inc., has broken ground on a $570 million joint capital investment program to support U.S. Steel Granite City Works, Granite City, IL. Construction of the facilities is expected to take approximately 18 months, and will generate about 900 temporary jobs at its peak. Upon completion, the facilities are expected to create 88 new full-time jobs.
Procter and Gamble - Procter and Gamble (P&G) has signed a six-year lease with Trammell Crow Company in Gateway Commerce Center in Edwardsville, IL. P&G will be moving into two existing 500,000-square-foot buildings, and has plans to expand.
Veran Medical Technologies, Inc. - Veran Medical Technologies, Inc. is a medical device start-up company which recently relocated its headquarters to St. Louis, MO. They have recently received $4.75 million in venture capital and private financing.
Furniture Brands International - Furniture Brands International announced that the company is continuing its transition into an operating company model with the move of its St. Louis corporate headquarters. The new world headquarters is in the St. Louis suburb of Clayton, MO. The new location will additionally add 150 new jobs totaling approximately 225 employees providing a full range of corporate functions.
Emerson - Emerson, a Fortune 500 global manufacturing and technology company, is building a state-of-the-art, $60 million, 35,000-square-foot data center at the company's headquarters campus in North St. Louis County, MO. The facility, which is anticipated to open next summer, will support Emerson's worldwide network. In addition to being the company's flagship data center, the new facility will qualify for LEED Silver certification.
Abengoa Bioenergy - Abengoa Bioenergy, a world leader in ethanol production, announced that a 79-acre site in the Tri-City Regional Port District in Madison, IL as the site of their new facility. The project is a receipent of a $4 million Renewable Fuels grant from the state of Illinois. The plant will provide 60 permanent jobs, and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2009.
Covidien Ltd. - Covidien, a leading global healthcare products company, is investing $100 million over the next five years in two facilities in St. Louis County, MO. The plans for the 12,000-square-foot Maryland Heights, MO expansion include a new radiopharmaceutical production line. The facility in Webster Groves, MO will be augmented to contain a 9,000-square-foot pilot lab. Covidien may add up to 30 new jobs in research and development and science-related fields.
bioMérieux - France-based bioMérieux, leader of in vitro diagnostics, is investing $9 million in the company's Hazelwood, MO location. The company is expecting construction on the 40,000-square-foot facility to be completed by September 2009. The Hazelwood location currently employs 570, and plans on hiring as it continues to grow. The new development, designed by world-renowned architect Jean Loup Partriarche, will be designed with LEED certification in mind.
Schattdecor - Schattdecor, a German-based manufacturer of paper for decorative laminates, is building the company's first North American plant in Maryland Heights, MO. As a global leader in the printing industry, Schattdecor has operated its North American sales office at the site for approximately 13 years. The manufacturing and printing plant will bring up to 100 new jobs, and is expected to be fully operational by early 2010.
Air Products - Air Products, a worldwide leader in production of gas and purification membranes, has announced plans to construct a new production facility in St. Charles, MO. The new facility will increase Air Products membrane output by over 50 percent, and it will provide state-of-the-art hollow fiber production and module assembly technology. The new plant is slated to be operational by early 2010.
