In 1996 Brenda D. Newberry founded her IT and systems consulting business with one employee – herself. Now it has 120 employees and has operations in eight states and two countries. Newberry’s secret: St. Louis’ strong and well-educated work force. “The Midwestern work ethic is very real,” Newberry explains. “We have nationally prominent educational institutions that entrepreneurs can leverage and that have provided our business with growth opportunities throughout the United States. And our central location is also helpful because telecom and travel costs are important for start-up companies.”
